Over the past few years, PC gaming has moved to native controller support for Microsoft's Xbox and Sony's PlayStation controllers. However, many older PC games, as well as some newer titles, do not support PlayStation 4 or 5 controllers.Fortunately, there is a tool that allows players to add this support themselves.
Controller emulation for full compatibility
DS4Windowsis an open source input mapper and virtual emulator designed to add PlayStation controller support to Windows 10 and 11.It works by remapping your PS4 or PS5 controller to an Xbox configuration, making your PC think an Xbox controller is plugged in, and for games that have native Xbox controller support, it works right out of the box.
If you're playing a game that doesn't support controllers, the software can be configured for direct keyboard remapping, letting you use your PS4 and PS5 controllers in every PC game in your library.
To get started, downloadDS4Windows, and extract the .zip file to your desktop for easy access.
In the unzipped folder, runDS4Windows.exe application to open the software. If you are running the software for the first time, you can choose whether you want to save the application data to the user's AppData folder, or if you prefer a portable installation, the Program folder where the application resides.
Follow the instructions in the new window to make sure you have the app set up correctly.Use "Install ViGEmBus Driver" first, as this is necessary for the application to work properly.
After installing this driver, if you are using Windows 7, you may need to install the 360 driver. Now is the time to plug your PS4 or PS5 controller into your computer, either via a micro USB/USB-C cable, or Bluetooth (if your computer supports Bluetooth).
The next step, optional but highly recommended, is to install the HidHide driver. This will allow your system to hide the PS4 or PS5 controller from other applications running on your system to ensure you don't cause double input (from physical and emulated controllers).
The last optional step is to install the FakerInput driver, which is necessary for some games with anti-cheat protection. This driver exposes the virtual keyboard, relative and absolute mouse to applications for keyboard and mouse mapping directly on the controller.
Configuring Profiles in DS4Windows
Once you have installed all necessary and optional drivers, select the Done button to open the main application window. At the bottom right, click the "Start" button and your connected PS4 or PS5 controller should now show up as an input device. If the selected profile option shows as "Default" in the drop-down menu, you've set everything up correctly and your controller will now be emulated as an Xbox controller.
From here, you've got everything set up to use your PS4 or PS5 controller in games that support Xbox controller input.
Under the Profiles tab, you can create a new profile that simulates keyboard and mouse input for games that don't support controllers at all, like first-person shooters, which means the tool's scope is limitless.Additionally, DS4Windows supports a wide range of controller types, including the Nintendo Switch Joy-Con and professional controllers.
Enjoy your old-school PC games with your PlayStation controller
DS4Windows allows you to use the console controller of your choice on your PC setup, regardless of the age or type of games you want to play.Hope you have fun!
