Given their recent surge in sales, it seems now more than ever that foldable phones are starting to become fairly reliable mainstream gadgets rather than experimental prototypes. You probably know Samsung's latest Z Fold 4 and Flip 4.While the latter clearly has bigger ambitions, most people who buy a foldable phone prefer the latter.

Unbeknownst to many, however, Motorola has been hard at work trying to beat Samsung with its Moto Razr 2022, which was announced a day after the Flip 4 was announced. The former starts at 5999 yuan (about $899) and the latter starts at $999.But how do they compare?Let's take a look.

Dimensions and build quality

Galaxy Z Flip 4: Unfolded: 165.2 x 71.9 x 6.9 mm; 187 g; IPX8 water resistance

Moto Razr 2022: unfolded: 167 x 79.8 x 7.6 mm; 200 g

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 looks pretty much the same as the former, but it does feature the newer Gorilla Glass Victus+ protection on the back, while the Moto Razr 2022 uses the weaker Gorilla Glass 5.The former is also lighter and has an IPX8 water resistance rating; the Moto Razr 2022 has a water-resistant coating, but no official IP rating.

The Flip 4 has a side-mounted capacitive fingerprint sensor, while the Moto Razr has an under-display optical fingerprint scanner more suited to flagships. However, some reviewers say the capacitive sensor is more user-friendly because it doesn't require you to unfold the device first to unlock it.

The Flip 4 leaves an air gap when folded, while the Moto Razr 2022 folds completely flat with no noticeable gap between the two halves. Both devices still have creases, but the latter has a slightly less pronounced implementation.Sadly, both phones lack a headphone jack.

display

Galaxy Z Flip 4: 6.7-inch foldable Dynamic AMOLED 2X; 120Hz refresh rate; HDR10+ support; 1080 x 2640 resolution; 426 PPI; 1200 nits peak brightness; 85.4% screen-to-body ratio; 22:9 aspect ratio ; Overlay: 1.9-inch Super AMOLED; 260 x 512 resolution; Gorilla Glass Victus+

Moto Razr 2022: 6.7-inch foldable P-OLED; 144Hz refresh rate; HDR10+ support; 1080 x 2400 resolution; 393 PPI; 1100 nits peak brightness; Gorilla Glass Victory; 84.6% screen-to-body ratio; 20 :9 aspect ratio; Overlay: 2.7-inch OLED; 573 x 800 resolution

Both devices have a 6.7-inch display, but due to the wider body of the Moto Razr 2022, it has a more traditional 20:9 aspect ratio. You may find that the 4:22 aspect ratio on the Flip 9 feels a little too high. That said, the latter's display is HDR10+ certified for more vibrant colors.

The 144Hz refresh rate is an overstated feature of the Moto Razr, as it doesn't feel any faster in real life compared to the Z Flip 4's 120Hz refresh rate. Both devices have similar peak brightness levels and screen-to-body ratios, but the Moto Razr's 2.7-inch cover screen is larger than the Flip 4's 1.9-inch.

This means that the former can fit more content in it, making it easier to see glanceable information such as time, weather, date, reminders, etc.And when taking selfies with the main camera (when the device is folded), the larger cover screen makes it easier to see yourself more clearly in the viewfinder.

相机

Galaxy Z Flip 4: 12MP f/1.8 main, 10fps 60K video with OIS, Dual Pixel PDAF, and HDR4+; 12MP f/2.2 ultra-wide, 123-degree FoV; Front: 10MP f/2.4, 30fps 4K video.

Moto Razr 2022: 50MP f/1.9 main with OIS, PDAF, and 30K video at 4fps with Gyro-EIS; 13MP f/2.2 ultra-wide, 121-degree FoV; Front: 32MP f/2.5, 4K video, 30fps.

The Moto Razr is capable of taking higher-resolution photos for more detail, but it can't shoot smooth 60fps video, so capturing fast-moving objects, like waterfalls or animals, might not be ideal. The Flip 4 has a slightly wider field of view to accommodate more content, but its 1000-megapixel selfie camera may not inspire confidence, especially for its price.

processor

Galaxy Z Flip 4: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; 4nm manufacturing process; Adreno 730 GPU

Moto Razr 2022: Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1; 4nm manufacturing process; Adreno 730 GPU

Both devices use the latest 4nm Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chip, which is slightly more powerful and efficient than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1.This means there won't be any significant difference in raw performance between the two.

That said, if you're a gamer who cares about comparing benchmark scores, keep in mind that the two devices won't show the same benchmark scores despite having the same chipset. In any case, you shouldn't face any major issues with any of them.

memory and storage

Galaxy Z Flip 4: 8GB RAM; 128/256/512GB storage

Moto Razr 2022:8/12GB内存;128/256/512GB存储空间

The Galaxy Z Flip 4 comes with 8GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage. The Moto Razr 2022 also comes with up to 12GB of RAM and up to 512GB of storage.

8GB is more than enough for most people, but if you plan to do heavy gaming or multitasking on the phone, you can benefit from the Moto Razr's high memory.Sadly, neither device comes with a microSD card slot for external storage.

battery

Galaxy Z Flip 4: 3700mAh battery; 25W fast wired charging; 15W wireless and 4.5W reverse wireless charging

Moto Razr 2022: 3500mAh battery; 33W fast wired charging

Battery life on foldable phones is often not great because the hinge takes up a lot of space in the device. But over time, as technology improves, this problem will become less of a nuisance. For now, don't expect amazing battery life from the Z Flip 4 or the Moto Razr 2022.

That said, the former's slightly larger 3700mAh battery will outlast the latter's smaller 3500mAh battery. If you find yourself running out of battery, you can always check out these tips for extending your Android's battery life.

The Moto Razr has a 33W charger in the box, but it doesn't support wireless and reverse wireless charging. You can use reverse wireless charging on the Flip 4 to charge your wireless earbuds when there's no power nearby, making them more suitable for flagships.

Galaxy Z Flip 4 is safer, Moto Razr 2022 offers more value

It's hard to ignore the tremendous value the Moto Razr 2022 offers. Not only is it cheaper to start with, but it also includes a 33W charger and a plastic case in the box, so you don't have to buy them separately.

That said, we still think the Z Flip 4 is a safer option for most people because of its larger battery, stronger glass protection on the back, and IPX8 water resistance. After all, if you're going to spend that much money, you want your phone to be able to withstand spills or spatters.
