Need to find your phone's IP address? You probably know how to find your IP address on your Mac or Windows computer, but what about your mobile device?
We are here to help you find the IP address of your iPhone or Android phone.Let's take a look at how to see your public and private IP addresses on your phone, what those addresses mean, and how to keep them safe.
What is an IP address?
First, we should explain what an IP address is so you know how to use the information you find. IP is short for Internet Protocol; an IP address is a numerical label assigned to every device connected to the network. So if you're wondering if your phone has an IP address, the answer is yes -- as long as you're online.
Checking a device's IP address helps you identify it on your home network and across the Internet. In fact, there are two IP addresses, public and private, that identify every device, including your phone:
A public IP address (or global IP address) is how the rest of the internet sees any device on your network.Because it's network-specific, your global IP is the same whether you're using your phone, desktop computer, or other device in your home.
As an analogy, consider that no matter who sends a letter from your home, it always has the same return address.
A private IP address (or local IP address) identifies devices on your own network.Only one device can have an address on a network, but the address can also be used on other private networks.
To continue the street address analogy above: think about it, even if you live at 502 Oak Street, another family living at 502 Maple Street is valid.Address numbers are not limited to one street in the entire world.
Also, when you check your IP address, you may see an IPv4 and an IPv6 address. IPv4 addresses are shorter, but the world is running out of IPv4 addresses due to the sheer number of internet-connected devices. IPv6 addresses are not as easy to read, but there are enough addresses to last a long time.
IPv4 remains the primary address in use in most cases, but IPv6 will phase out these addresses over time.
How to Find Your Phone's Private IP Address
As mentioned above, there are two values to check when you want to know your phone's IP address.First let's see how to find your phone's private IP address on your home network (or any other Wi-Fi network).
How to Find Your Android Phone's Private IP Address
Here are the steps to find your Android phone's local IP address, shown on a Pixel device running Android 11.The location of this information and the name of the menu may vary slightly, depending on your Android phone:
1. Open Settings and browse to Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.If you are using Android 12, this is under Network & Internet > Internet.
2. If you are not already connected to your Wi-Fi network, click on its name to confirm that you have joined.
3. Click the name of the network and expand the Advanced section if necessary.
4. Here you will find your IP address and other information under Network Details. If available, the IPv6 address appears at the bottom of the page.
How to Find Your iPhone's Private IP Address
To find your local IP address on your iPhone, here's how:
1. Go to Settings > Wi-Fi.
2. If you are not already connected to your home network, tap it and connect now.
3. Tap your network name to open its options and view more information.
4. Here, you will see the IP Address field listed under the IPv4 Address heading.
Depending on your network, you may see an IPv6 address header below that contains an alternate address for your device.
How to Check Your Phone's Public IP Address
Now that you know your phone's private IP address on the web, let's take a look at how to check your device's global IP address.
Your public IP is easy to find because any device on the internet can see it.As a result, you can visit numerous websites that will instantly reveal your public IP address, right on your phone. This is the same no matter what carrier you use, so there is no specific way to check the IP address of a T-Mobile phone versus a device on Verizon.
Just open Chrome on your Android phone, or Safari (or whatever other browser you use) on your iPhone. Then navigate to a public IP checker website, such as one of the following:
You'll notice that some of these sites also display your location, ISP name, and similar information. This is because your IP address carries this information. You can't figure out a person's name and exact address from their IP address, but it does narrow their location down to a city.
Understanding Dynamic and Static IP Addresses
You should know that most of the time, the public and private IP addresses you find for your phone are not fixed. For your global and local IP, your phone may be showing a dynamic IP address.
This means that after some time or when the device reboots, the device or your entire network will get a new IP address.Conversely, a static IP doesn't change over time like this.
A dynamic public IP is easier for your ISP (like Comcast or Verizon) to manage because they can adjust it as needed. You can request a static IP from your ISP, but this usually costs extra. For home users, they are not necessary unless you host a server for others to access from outside your network.
For private IP addresses, your router uses DHCP (Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol) to dynamically assign them to devices on your network. In practice, this means that when you connect a new device to your home Wi-Fi, you don't have to manually assign it an IP address and keep track of everything yourself.
If you want, you can use the settings on your router and various devices to assign static private IP addresses. But again, this is something that only power users really need to worry about. If done incorrectly, it can cause problems like IP conflicts and become more trouble than it's worth.
How to Hide Your Phone's IP Address
After finding your current IP and learning that it exposed your location, you may be concerned about the privacy implications. If so, one way to obfuscate your public IP is to start using a VPN (Virtual Private Network).
Essentially, connecting to a VPN provider lets all your traffic go through its servers. To the outside world, your traffic is coming from another place. This masks your IP and can make it harder for your browsing to connect with you or your location.
A VPN isn't a one-click bulletproof privacy solution, but it's an easy way to hide your public IP in most cases.
What is my phone's IP address?now you know
It's easy to see your IP address no matter what phone you're using. While you may not need to check it often, it's a great skill for any user, and you now have the ability to check your phone's IP address at any time.
And, knowing your device's IP address can help you when you're troubleshooting various network issues.
