Apple'sAirPods ProThe earbuds have been critically acclaimed since their release. Most would say they're worth the competition compared to other similarly priced wireless earphones. However, someAirPods ProUsers report disappointing bass, poor noise cancellation, or poor overall sound quality when using them.
That's why we're here to show you how to improve the sound of your AirPods Pro so you can get the most out of your earbuds. We'll look at the best ways to boost the bass, edit the EQ, and improve noise cancellation on the AirPods Pro.
And, some of these tips also apply to regular AirPods.
1. Update your AirPods
The first way to improve the sound of your AirPods Pro is to make sure they are updated.Apple occasionally releases firmware updates for the AirPods to tweak their equalizers and improve their sound quality. You probably never noticed this because AirPods are set to update automatically in the background.
However, you can also set your AirPods to manually check for and install these firmware updates. Here's how to update your AirPods Pro firmware:
1. Make sure your AirPods Pro are in their charging case.
2. Plug in or wirelessly charge the case.
3. Make sure your iPhone is connected to the Internet.
4. Keep your AirPods Pro in close proximity or connected to your iPhone.
Your AirPods Pro will update automatically.Depending on the update, their sound should be improved.
2. Toggle Noise Control Settings
Surprisingly, one of the best ways to improve the sound quality of your AirPods Pro may be to turn off Active Noise Cancellation (ANC).This doesn't necessarily mean you should turn on transparency mode - you may want to keep all audio processing on for the best possible sound.
While this may sound counterintuitive because you would think noise cancellation would improve the sound, that's not always true. The process of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) can actually degrade audio quality because a lot of sound processing is going on behind the scenes.
Part of the reason for this is that Apple's adaptive equalization technology inside the AirPods Pro automatically adjusts the equalization of these earbuds every second to provide the best noise-cancelling experience. But if you're listening on the move, all these subtle changes can create a fluttering or fluttering effect on the high-end sound.
At other times, ANC seems to improve the balance of the AirPods Pro by boosting the bass.Apple has a habit of changing this all the time with new AirPods Pro firmware updates, so the best thing you can do is experiment with ANC, transparency, and off settings on your own AirPods.
Now that you know, here's how to toggle the noise control setting on AirPods Pro:
1. Swipe down from the top right corner of your iPhone to open Control Center.Or, if your iPhone has a home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
2. Long press on the volume bar and it should show an AirPods Pro icon.
3. Tap Noise Control and select one of the three options.
Alternatively, you can long-press the force sensor on the AirPods Pro (on its stem) to toggle noise control mode, but you'll need to make "off" an option first. To do this, follow these steps:
1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth on your iPhone.
2. Tap the i button next to your AirPods Pro.
3. Under "Press and hold AirPods", tap "Left" and enable the "Off" option. Now repeat this step for the AirPod on the right.
If you're in doubt as to which option sounds best, it's usually safest to turn off noise control to eliminate any unnecessary processing of the sound.
3. Do the earplug fit test
If your AirPods Pro still sound uncomfortable, it may be because the included ear tips don't seal well against your ears.Luckily, there's a quick way to find out what size (small, medium, large) is right for you.
Apple offers a software-based earbud matching test on your device. This lets you know which size eartips will best prevent sound from leaking into or out of your ears. Methods as below:
1. Connect your AirPods Pro to your iPhone.
2. Open Settings and select Bluetooth.
3. Tap the i button next to AirPods Pro.
4. Scroll down to tap Ear Tip Fit Test and follow the on-screen steps.
5. If the ear tips do not provide a good seal, please switch to another size and try again. You may need to use a different size for each ear.
During the test, you will hear some music playing. As we mentioned, this is all part of testing to see what produces the best sound.Hopefully you now have a good idea of which earbud size is best for you.
4. Modify the EQ for your AirPods Pro
Everyone's ears, preferences, and degree of hearing loss are different. So what sounds good to others may sound bad to you.For this reason, Apple offers a headphone adjustment feature that lets you customize the equalizer (EQ) for your AirPods Pro.
These settings are especially useful for people with severe hearing loss, but are also a great way to boost the bass, treble, or mids of the AirPods Pro.You can even take a hearing test to make the AirPods Pro EQ perfectly match your hearing.
Here's how to edit your AirPods EQ on iPhone:
1. Go to Settings > Accessibility.
2. Scroll down and tap Audio/Visual.
3. Tap Headphone Adaptation and enable the toggle key at the top of the screen.
4. You can now choose from three preset options to optimize the sound for balance, range or brightness.
5. Alternatively, tap Customize Audio Settings to complete a short listening test and customize your AirPods Pro EQ based on the test results. After completing the test, select Audiogram from the EQ options.
5. Disable or edit spatial audio
Apple's Spatial Audio feature creates the effect of sound coming from all around you: above, below, in front and behind, as well as the classic left and right directions you get in stereo audio.Apple does this with Dolby Atmos mixing in the streaming app, but it can also take advantage of the Spatialized Stereo feature to create the same 3D effect with a stereo source.
But unfortunately, not everything sounds better with spatial audio. Some songs feel more distant when played with spatial audio, lose their punch, or just get muddy.
What's more, Apple's Dynamic Head Tracking pans sounds as you turn your head, so they always sound like they're coming from your device's screen. That's fine when you're watching a movie, but a little lousy for listening to music -- especially when you've got your iPhone in your pocket and you're moving your head around.
So you might want to try disabling both of these features - Spatial Audio and Dynamic Head Tracking - to improve the sound of your AirPods Pro.
To disable spatial audio:
1. Swipe down from the top right corner of your iPhone to open Control Center.Or, if your iPhone has a home button, swipe up from the bottom of the screen.
2. Long press on the volume bar and it should show an AirPods Pro icon.
3. Toggle the Spatial Audio or Spatialize Stereo button that appears in the lower right corner.
4. To keep spatial audio but disable dynamic head tracking, select the Fixed option.
6. Modify the EQ for your music app
Depending on the music streaming service you use, you can adjust the equalizer settings to greatly improve the sound quality of your AirPods Pro.Here's how to do it on two of the most popular music streaming apps: Spotify and Apple Music.
To modify Spotify's equalizer:
1. Open Spotify.
2. From the "Home" tab, click the "Settings" icon.
3. Select Play > Equalizer.
4. Test out the presets to see what sounds best for you, most recommend Bass Booster for AirPods Pro users.
5. Alternatively, you can manually adjust the equalizer by dragging the slider at the top of the screen.
To modify the EQ in Apple Music:
1. Go to the Settings app on your phone.
2. Scroll down to Music.
3. Select EQ from the list.
4. Select your desired EQ setting. For example, if you want to boost the bass on your AirPods Pro, choose Boost Bass.
.
After doing this, you should already be able to boost the bass of the AirPods Pro.
7. Improve sound quality
Next, we'll show you how to improve audio quality in Spotify and Apple Music, as these are the most popular music streaming apps. But keep in mind that there are also streaming services like Tidal and Amazon Music HD that offer super high-fidelity music for audiophiles.
Here's how to improve the audio quality of Spotify Premium:
1. Open Spotify and tap the Settings icon.
2. Select the audio quality.
3. Select High or Very High for each streaming and download type.
In Apple Music, follow these steps to choose your music quality:
1. Go to Settings > Music.
2. Under Audio, tap Audio Quality.
3. In the Mobile data streaming options, select High Quality.Note that you can also enable lossless audio, but the AirPods Pro don't support this, so listening through them won't affect the sound quality.
After changing this setting, your music should sound clearer. However, you should be aware that this can negatively impact the amount of data Spotify or Apple Music uses.96kbps (high quality) or 160kbps (very high quality) is a big data difference compared to 320kbps (normal quality). If you need to save data, consider changing this only when using Wi-Fi.
8. Charge your AirPods
While this may seem obvious, we often forget that our earbuds run out of battery after a long period of listening. When the battery of any audio device runs low, the sound tends to get worse. If the sound quality is poor, make sure your AirPods Pro are charged.
Speaking of which, here's a quick tip for wireless charging: You can check the battery status by simply tapping your finger on the AirPods Pro case.If it's amber, it's still charging. If it is green, it is fully charged.
To make it easier to keep track of your AirPods Pro battery levels in the future, you can add a battery widget to your home screen:
1. Tap and hold an empty spot on the Home screen.
2. Click the Add (+) button in the corner.
3. Scroll through the available widgets and select Battery.
4. Select the widget of the size you want to use, then tap Add widget and place it on the home screen.
5. Whenever your AirPods Pro is turned on, just look for the widget to check its battery level.
Now, you can more easily track your AirPods' battery to avoid low-battery situations and keep it sound.
9. Buy memory foam earbuds
Apple's silicone ear tips for the AirPods Pro work well. However, if you're looking for a better fit, or to improve bass response, memory foam earbuds might be a good choice.
Memory foam, a commonly used material in mattresses, has a soft, fluffy structure that adjusts to your ears and remembers its shape for maximum comfort.
Hopefully, switching to the foam ear tips will solve your AirPods Pro lack of sound.
Let your AirPods Pro do the best they can
The methods we listed above should allow you to boost the bass or adjust the equalizer to improve the sound of your AirPods Pro.Getting the best sound out of your headphones is always important, especially if you're paying a fortune to buy them.
