Samsung offers several apps for smartphones and tablets designed to help you organize your digital life, from securely storing your passwords in Samsung Pass to making payments with the Pay app.Samsung Wallet lets you combine these tools and a few others into one easy-to-use app.Let's see how to use it.

What is Samsung Wallet and what is it used for?

Samsung Wallet is designed to be a digital version of your actual wallet.Just like a physical wallet, it can contain credit and debit cards, store loyalty cards, passwords, and anything else you want to keep safe on your body.Everything is kept in one place, not scattered across multiple apps on your device.

You can then pay, collect reward points in stores, redeem vouchers, and even unlock your car with your phone. If you have the Samsung Pay app on your device, Samsung Wallet will replace it.Once you start using the password section, so does the Samsung Pass app.

Digital wallets like this are not a new idea.Apple launched the Wallet app for iOS in 2015 as an alternative to the earlier Passbook app.

Get started with Samsung Wallet

Adding it to your Samsung wallet isn't difficult, as long as your credit or debit card issuer supports the use of the Samsung Pay service.

1. Open the app and select Payment Cards.Click the "+" button to scan a new card.

2. Place your card on a flat surface and align it with the rectangle on the screen. The application should detect the card and read the card number.

3. Check that the number is read correctly, then add other details of your card. This includes your name, expiration date and security code (CVC, CVV or CID).

4. Select how you want to allow the card to be used. All options except "Don't Allow" allow you to use the card through the wallet app.

5. Add your billing address information.Just like when you shop online, the billing address you enter must match the address registered on the card.

6. Click "Next" and wait for the application to verify your card information.Follow any further verification steps from your card issuer.Once done, your card is ready to be used in Samsung Wallet.

The exact steps to verify your card may vary, depending on the card issuer. You may need to digitally sign your card, or verify it through your banking app.

Add membership card

In addition to payment cards, Samsung Wallet also allows you to add store loyalty cards. It's fairly easy as you don't need to enter security details like you would with a payment card.

Open Samsung Wallet and tap Membership Card.If you have any settings in other apps, you can choose to import them into Wallet. If not, you can select a card from the featured card list, or enter card details manually.

Set up quick access to the wallet

Quick access makes it easier for you to use your payment card.Even if your phone screen is locked, you can have your card ready to pay in just a few clicks.

1. Open Samsung Wallet. You should see your available payment and loyalty cards in the Quick Access tab.

2. Tap the Menu tab, then tap Settings > Quick Access > Access Locations and Default Cards.

3. Select a location for quick access.Choices include lock screen, home screen, and when the screen is off.You can enable more than one.

4. If you have more than one card added to your wallet, tap Set Default Card.Choose the card you want to be the default in Quick Access.

5. You can add additional cards to Quick Access at a later date.Select the "Quick Access" tab, click the "+" button, and select the type of card you want to add. Then choose a card from those available.

6. Now, at the location you selected, a small handle will be visible at the bottom of the screen.Swipe up on this handle, enter your authorization, and you're ready to pay.

Manage passwords in Samsung Wallet

Samsung Pass is not really a password manager app like LastPass. It's where your phone stores login information for apps and websites. You can manually add login information and information added automatically by your phone.

1. Open the Samsung Pass app, if you haven't updated to Samsung Wallet, click the link.If you no longer see Samsung Pass, it may have been moved to the Wallet app.

2. In Samsung Wallet, click Login Information and authorize using your PIN, password or biometrics.

3. A list of your login information will be displayed. You can click on any of them to view details, including passwords.

4. Click the Manual tab, then the "+" button.

5. Enter any login details you want to add. These include login name, user ID and password.

Card Verification Settings

You don't need to unlock Samsung Wallet to view cards and change their settings. However, you'll need to authenticate yourself before making card payments or accessing login data through the app.

If fingerprint unlock is enabled on your device, Samsung Wallet will use this as the default verification method. If you don't use fingerprint recognition, you can also use a PIN code. You can manage authentication settings in Menu > Settings > Authentication Methods.

What else can you store in Samsung Wallet?

In addition to payments, store loyalty cards and check-in information, Samsung Wallet can be used to store other things. The number of features on Samsung Wallet will likely expand over time, but here are some additional features at launch:

Digital key/pass

If your vehicle has a digital key, you might be able to link that key to Samsung Wallet. This will enable you to unlock and even start your vehicle with your phone. This feature is currently limited to some available countries and automakers.

boarding pass

If you booked a flight with one of the airlines that support Samsung Wallet, you can use it to store your boarding pass. This feature is limited to a few airlines, but could be expanded to more.

discount voucher

If you have coupons to use in stores or elsewhere, you can save those coupons in Samsung Wallet. You can manually enter the coupon details, or take a photo of the coupon or coupon barcode and set an expiration date. Then, when the coupon's expiration date gets closer, you'll get an alert.

Get started with Samsung Wallet

Samsung Wallet replaces Samsung Pay, so if you use that payment tool, you'll need to switch sooner or later. Samsung Wallet is a great way to keep all your important data in one place on your device. It makes it easier to use your phone as a payment tool and means you don't have to visit multiple apps to earn your loyalty points or use coupons.
