You may or may not know it, but your iPhone secretly keeps a list of all the places you visit frequently. This feature is called "Vital Locations".While some iPhone users find this helpful, others see it as a security risk.

We decided to dig deeper to discover how "important locations" work, and whether this feature is something you need to worry about.

What is the important location feature of iOS?

Important Locations is an iPhone feature that keeps track of all the places you go frequently. This is to give your iPhone a better understanding of the places you like to go and provide you with relevant information and advice.

Apple uses "Significant Locations" to try and predict where you're going that day.If you go to a relative's house every Saturday, you might see their location at the top of your Apple Maps suggestions for the day.You may also receive notifications about traffic and weather at the location.

The location is only stored on your device, not in iCloud. You can also opt out of important locations if you feel this violates your privacy.

How does the important location feature of iOS work?

Significant Locations work with the GPS on your iPhone. With this GPS, it can track the places you frequent, such as your workplace. It can also find places you often like to go, such as your favorite restaurant or a relative's house.

The algorithm that determines this seems to be based on how often you go to a place, and whether you've been there for an extended period of time.It all happens in the background without any notification or action from you.

How do I view and close important locations?

The important location is in your iPhone settings. If you want to see a list of your important locations, or turn it off, go to Settings > Privacy > Location Services > System Settings > Important Locations.

Here you can see your most recent records. You can see how long you've been at a place and whether the place has a name in your Maps app.You can also see how many records you have.

At the bottom of the page, you can click Clear History to delete your important locations and start over.If you prefer to turn it off, you can toggle the green button at the top to disable Important Locations. Also consider disabling tracking for individual apps if you turn it off.

Are Significant Locations a security risk?

According to Apple, "Vital Locations" use advanced encryption to keep them private. Not even Apple can see your location.Apple claims it does this to let your iPhone know which locations are important to you.

But why is this necessary? With Apple Maps, you can enter your home and work addresses, as well as your preferred locations. So why is it a "significant location"?It seems like it just helps your iPhone show you more relevant information. For example, knowing your daily commute can help Apple provide you with relevant traffic information.

While this may help some, others are concerned that the risk of the information being compromised is too great. You can turn it off if you're worried about "important locations".

Should you disable Significant Locations?

For now, "Vital Locations" appear to be safe with no security risks. However, if someone gets into your iPhone, they can view the places you visit frequently, which is a privacy concern and possibly a security risk. While it's not possible now, it's possible that third-party apps could access your important locations in the future.

Luckily, you can turn off "important locations" so you don't have to worry about that.If that's something you're worried about, turning it off won't change much. However, leaving it on can help your iPhone perform at its best.As always, the choice is yours.
